Ned Schwing stated in his reference reserve over the Product 1890 & 1906 that Winchester started proof marking them in 1908… I don't know if that is precise, but will believe that it's. The “WP” evidence mark was used following the barrel and receiver have been mated, assembled and finished. This is very evident around the firearms created within the late teens by way of early 30s once the blue flaked (popped) off in the event the proof was struck about the receiver frame.
